Could this weekend be your last hurrah to make and enjoy a frozen treat? I wouldn’t leave anything to chance when it comes to dessert! I can honestly proclaim that Black Grape and Sparkling Wine Sorbet is one of the most delicious treats I’ve enjoyed this summer.
It took me three attempts to get this recipe for Black Grape and Sparkling Wine sorbet just right. After each attempt – and failure – I wanted it even more!
Since black grapes are so flavorful and richly colorful, it stands to reason that they’d be a top choice for sorbet. I couldn’t resist the urge to add sparkling wine to this recipe (drinking a bit along the way), and I’m sure if you try it you’ll be happy with the flavor.
My first two tries at this sorbet didn’t freeze up properly and I was left with a soupy (although delicious) mixture. My emotions kept my husband laughing: I was so gleeful over the flavor, yet bummed that I couldn’t seem to make liquid freeze.
Another good thing to come out of this recipe were peanut butter and jelly smoothies. Sounds strange, but I saved the solid pieces left behind after straining the grapes and combined them with peanut butter powder, plain Greek yogurt, and some flax seeds. So good!
I can’t guarantee that you could make this sorbet without an ice cream maker, but I’m leaning toward, yeah, you probably could. You’d likely need to freeze the mixture for a few hours, scrape it up, freeze it again, scrape, and freeze (or however many rounds of freezing-scraping-freezing it takes to get the consistency you want).
Summer isn’t over yet, and since you can probably still get your hands on black seedless grapes, I highly recommend making Black Grape and Sparkling Wine Sorbet. I’m so glad I persisted until I got it right – so worth the wait!

This is a delicious and flavorful treat that is easy to make -- only a few ingredients! This makes about 3 pints.
Ingredients
- 4 cups black seedless grapes
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup sparkling wine
Instructions
- Be sure to have a pre-chilled ice cream maker bowl ready. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper so it hangs over the edges. Set aside.
- Combine the sugar and water. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Put the mixture in the refrigerator until cool.
- Add the grapes to a blender. Blend until smooth. Strain the grapes through a fine mesh sieve (I saved the solid pieces and used them in a smoothie).
- Combine the grape juice, sugar water, and sparkling wine. Sitr to combine. Add the mixture to the chilled ice cream maker bowl. Cover and freeze for about an hour (or according to the maker’s recommendation).
- Process in your ice cream maker for 10-15 minutes. Stir and break up any frozen chunks, and transfer the mixture to the lined loaf pan.
- Freeze for several hours or even overnight, scoop and serve.
Notes
Although I haven't tried, I think you could make this sorbet without an ice cream maker. Freeze, scrape the mixture, then freeze and scrape again until you reach your desired consistency.
