Banana Donuts with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting should be on the menu to help you use up those ripening bananas! These golden donuts are easy to make (and they’re baked) and are quite a treat. I’m pretty sure that the next time I buy bananas, I’ll keep at least one around a little longer, just to use for a batch of these donuts.
When I have overripe bananas in the kitchen I usually add them to smoothies, but today I wanted to bake. Instead of the usual banana bread or banana muffins, I went back and forth – apparently not just in my head — wondering how banana donuts might taste.
“Make the donuts!” my husband cheered. “Everyone loves donuts!” And that is how Banana Donuts with Cinnamon-Cream Cheese Frosting came to be.
Banana Donuts with Cinnamon-Cream Cheese Frosting
You’ll love that these donuts are cakey and, even though they’re baked, not dry in the least thanks to the added banana. Sure I could have gone with a simple glaze for these goodies, but I went full out and topped them with a cream cheese frosting. Both the donuts and the frosting are super simple to make.
You can easily adjust the frosting: add more cinnamon if you’re a cinnamon lover. Make the frosting thicker or thinner — the choice is yours. Or switch things up altogether and make a peanut butter frosting instead.
I had some banana chips in my cupboard, so I chopped them up to sprinkle over the tops of these treats. You could also use toasted walnut pieces, or chopped chocolate (I’m a little bummed that I was out of chocolate).
If you’re interested in something a little different (and equally delightful), try my recipe for Chocolate Beet Donuts with Peppermint Cream Cheese Frosting. If you’re looking for twist on banana bread, my recipe for Oatmeal-Banana Bread with Apricots and Ricotta might be for you. Or, stick with a smoothie like Cashew and Banana Smoothies.
In the infamous words of my husband, “Everyone loves donuts!” Try these Banana Donuts with Cream Cheese Frosting. I bet you’ll love them as much as we do!

Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1-1/4 cups sugar
- 1 large banana, mashed
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Banana chips, rough chopped, for garnish
- 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt
- 1-1/2-2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, more or less to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly spray two donut pans with the nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk to combine.
- In a separate medium bowl, add the milk, beaten egg, butter, sugar, and mashed banana. Whisk to combine until incorporated. Try to make sure you’ve smoothed out as much of the mashed banana as possible.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Working in two batches, add the liquid mixture and stir with a wooden spoon, until incorporated.
- Transfer the batter to a pastry bag, or a zippered plastic bag. Seal the plastic bag, and cut off the very tip of one of the bottom corners. Pipe the batter into the donut pans, about 3/4 of the way to the top.
- Bake 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven. Let the donuts sit in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before adding the frosting.
- Garnish with the banana chip pieces.
- Add the cream cheese and Greek yogurt to a bowl. Use a mixer to blend to combine the ingredients. Add the confectioners’ sugar, a little at a time, and blend until smooth.
- Add the cinnamon and mix to combine.
- If you like frosting to be a bit thicker, add more confectioners’ sugar. If you like it a bit runnier, add a little more Greek yogurt, about 1/2 tablespoon at a time.
- Spread the frosting over the completely cooled donuts and top with the banana chip pieces.
